A tooth extraction can feel like a big deal, especially for a child. If they’ve never gone through an extraction before, they might need a little help in the recovery phase. That’s where you come in! With the right care, your child can bounce back quickly and comfortably. Continue reading to see five simple ways to become your child’s healing hero as they recover from their tooth extraction.
Clean Hands, Clean Mouth!
Help your child stay clean and hygienic as they go about their daily routine. This might mean a few extra trips to the sink for washing their hands. This simple practice will help make sure they don’t accidentally introduce harmful bacteria into their mouth. Keep an eye on your child’s extraction site and remind them not to touch or poke at it, even if it feels weird. The less it gets prodded and exposed to germs, the faster it’ll heal.
Keep It Cool with Ice Packs
A little swelling is normal after a tooth extraction, but it can be uncomfortable. Using an ice pack on the outside of your child’s cheek for 10–20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. Just be sure to give their skin a 30-minute break between ice treatments to protect their skin.
Soft Foods, Please!
While extraction can be annoying to deal with for your child, it may present a unique opportunity to spoil them with some soft treats. Applesauce, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and fruit puree are all great and nutritious options. Just be sure to avoid anything too hot, spicy, or crunchy for the first few days.
Skip the Straw
There’s almost nothing more enjoyable for a small child than drinking through a straw. However, they should be avoided for the first few days of recovery. The suction created by straws can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, leading to a painful condition called dry socket.
Keep an Eye Out
It’s important to check in with your child for any signs of complications, such as excessive bleeding, increased pain, or swelling after a couple of days. If something seems off, don’t hesitate to give their dentist a call. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to their health!
By following these simple steps, you can help ensure your child heals smoothly after a tooth extraction. A little extra care, patience, and a spoonful of pudding can go a long way toward making the experience less about the healing and more about the time you spend bonding together.
